Competition Law (LLB)

Associate Professor Caron Beaton-Wells and Arlen Duke

This is one of the most popular optional subjects offered to the Melbourne Law School's undergraduate students.  The subject aims to introduce students to the relationship between the disciplines of law and economics in the context of competition law.  The regulation of cartel conduct, misuse of market power, vertical restraints (price and non-price) and merger conduct is examined in detail.  Students are also introduced to the different roles played by regulatory authorities and the courts in enforcing provisions of the Trade Practices Act as well as the clearance, authorisation and notification processes.

Advanced Legal Research (LLB)

Associate Professor Caron Beaton-Wells and Arlen Duke (supervisors)

Many LLB students with an interest in competition law may enrol in the subject, Advanced Legal Research. Students enrolled in Advanced Legal Research are required to engage in self-directed research with guidance from an academic member of staff. Students have written on a variety of topics including resale price maintenance and luxury goods, creeping acquisitions and merger reforms, the competition law and intellectual property interface and the per se ban on third line forcing.
