Competition Law Overview Seminar
The Competition Law Overview Seminar is a one-day seminar taught by Associate Professor Caron Beaton-Wells and Arlen Duke. It is designed to provide a general understanding of the competition law regime set out in the Trade Practices Act, with particular emphasis on the prohibitions contained in Part IV of the Act. It is ideal for those considering enrolment in one of the subjects in the Competition Law specialty of the Melbourne Law Masters program or in the Graduate Diploma in Competition Law or for those who practice in a related area incorporates competition issues. Principal topics include: the structure and purpose of the Trade Practices Act; the key economic concepts of markets, competition and market power; mergers; cartels; misuse of market power; vertical restraints (non-price and price); access; enforcement and clearance, notification and authorisation.
The seminar is held in Melbourne once a year at the Melbourne Law School. It is also generally held once a year in one other State. In the last two years the seminar has also been run for the ACCC in Canberra. In 2009 the seminar was held in Sydney (hosted by Mallesons Stephen Jaques) and in 2010 it was held in Brisbane (hosted by Minter Ellison). In 2010, it will be held in Perth (venue to be confirmed).
